RÊVE's Guide to Florence's Mini Wine-Doors - "Bucchette del vino"

BY RÊVE

"Wine doors" or "Bucchette del vino", are small windows found in the streets of Florence, particularly in the historic center. These windows were used in the past to sell wine directly to people who were passing by. Today many of these little doors have been restored and some are still in function for selling wine. The "buchette del vino" have become a symbol of the food and wine tradition of Florence and are highly appreciated by tourists who visit the city.

These tiny architectural gems are a unique part of the city's history and culture, and a must-see for wine enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.

As you wander through the streets of Florence, keep an eye out for these miniature doors, usually located at ground level. They were originally used as a way for winemakers to sell their products directly to customers without having to open a full-sized shop. Today, they serve as a charming reminder of the city's rich winemaking heritage.

History repeats itself though because during the pandemic in 2020, when COVID-19 was still very much affecting Italy, once the first hard lockdown ended, there was something special going on in Firenze: wine windows “bucchette del vino” were opening back up to serve socially-distanced drinks to consumers. This news spread worldwide very fast. Finally, a COVID-related story that was positive (and a reason for many people to get a plane ticket to Florence ASAP)!

Behind these tiny doors, you'll find a world of delicious wines waiting to be discovered. Many of these mini wine-doors are connected to historic wine cellars, where local producers store their bottles. Step inside and you'll be greeted by a cozy atmosphere and shelves filled with a variety of Tuscan wines, from Chianti to Brunello di Montalcino.

The best part? You can actually purchase a bottle of wine through these mini wine-doors! Simply ring the bell or knock on the door, and the friendly staff will assist you in selecting the perfect bottle to take home or enjoy on the spot. It's a truly unique and immersive wine-buying experience.

Osteria Belle Donne - Our favourite one is located in Via delle Belle Donne 16. While these mini wine-doors can be found throughout the city, some popular areas to spot them include the Oltrarno district, near the Ponte Vecchio, and around the Santa Croce neighborhood. So, put on your walking shoes, follow the trail of these charming doors, and let Florence's wine heritage unfold before your eyes!
